We Are Just Dust In The Wind
I had gone downstate to ride in a 50 mile event that was supposed to be over gently rolling hills near the coast. 50 miles shouldnt be so bad since I've done that before without a problem.

My mistake.

As the pelaton (pack of riders) started thru the first 10 miles, the headwind began driving thru everyone. Even the professional riders that were performing the century (riding 100 miles) were beginning to suffer from the wind.

Then the gentle rolling hills became an extremely large one as the hills rolled together... All into the headwind. As the wind got stronger, sand and dirt from the road kicked up, blowing into the riders' faces.

By the first break area at the 12 mile mark, the pelaton had broken up into groups; the professionals that were strong enough to get thru the hills and wind, and then there was the rest of us. Those other seventy riders that were suffering just from the ride itself.

By the 25 mile mark, the wind blew thru us and splintered the pack into small groups of 2 or 3. As riders came in, the expression of relief would overcome them.

Then there were us fools that continued on...

By the 31 mile mark, the wind was constant, blowing more sand and dirt into the riders. After that it got worse.

On the way to the 43 mile rest stop, the road took us thru a neighborhood that was under construction... uphill... both ways... directly into the wind.

Dirt flew across our faces almost to the point where we couldnt see. Breathing became difficult, especially as we watched the century riders flew by. Even they were struggling against the wind and sand.

By the 47 mile mark, my body began cramping. My quads began pulsing, rebelling against my commands. The legs refused to pedal any more, screaming "Screw You! We're Tired!"

Internal conflict tore through me as the support van rode by, asking if I needed a ride back to the starting point. Valour got the best of me as I succumbed to the pain and opted for the ride of shame.

And what did I get out of this experience? A slight wind and sand burned face, arms, and legs, severe leg cramps, and a sore back.

I cant wait to do this again. Heh... Time for more weight training and potassium.

Weight Problems
I had recently gotten a letter from my insurance company noting that they were no longer covering "Morbid Obesity Operations." I remember thinking how that seemed kind of silly to be covering it in the first place, but then I remember my employment in a previous life.

I did my internship at a local hospital and every so often, got talked into leaving the computer lab to assist in the moving of a patient that would be close to 500 lbs due to a thyroid disease and other factors. This patient would have to undergo similiar surgery to help relieve the stress for the heart and lungs although the body was still quite large.

And then an article such as this discusses how teens are now using stomach stapling in order to get rid of fat.

The operation is just too easy to give for people who really dont need it and now, those who really do need it, cant get insurance to pay for it.

Great. Thanks a lot, folks.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
Its ironic that my last post made fun of drunk drivers, but the point was that the driver himself would be the only casaulty, not anyone else.

On the night of March 16, 2004, a friend of my brother, Ben Jr was exiting out of a tavern with two friends. As they were coming out, none of the small party saw the drunk driver speeding down the beach road. I can only imagine the shocked looks they had as this driver plowed thru three street posts, thru Ben, and into the same tavern they just left.

Then there was Ben, laying in a pool of his own blood, being craddled by one of his friends. She remembered how all he could do was mumble "I just have to breathe. I just have to keep breathing."

Then he died in her arms.

I remember this young man. Hell, who am I kidding? He was just a boy. Just like my brother, Ric, he was only 21. They were close friends so I watched them both grow up thorough high school and through college.

Ben was a happy go-lucky guy, making others laugh and smile along with him. He was a friend of the family, always willing to help out when needed. There were the nights that all of us would hang out and play video games or the card game, Magic The Gathering. It was only a week prior that both Ric and Ben were hanging out together.

And now this night, we were sitting in a funeral home for Ben's viewing. I could only sit there helpless as a small part of the Asian community, wondering why this senseless death had to even happen. Many faces I hadnt seen since Ric was in high school were within this place. Tears and sadness were flowing freely. Those young men that knew Ben were fighting from weeping openly, only to fail when songs in the old tongue ring thru the chapel.

At one point, it was quiet with just the slight sniffling going around, waiting while a small video about Ben is being set up. And in the next moment, Ben's mother lost her composure, wailing loudly, crying profusely. The rest of the large group began to follow suit.

I could only watch helplessly as my own brother broke down. I found myself praying, wishing that I could take away this pain from these people.

I know I cant. I can only pray for the family and for other families who have to go thru such senseless things. Praying that no one would ever have to go thru such a sadness ever again.

Tomorrow will be the funeral. Tomorrow will be filled with sorrow, loss, and prayer.

Maybe one day, the driver of that Jeep will be forgiven by God because I know that many us wont forgive him.

You will be missed, Ben. God speed.

This Is An Audible Odyssey
Somehow I got talked into going to a Linkin Park concert. Granted, that really wasnt a tough thing to do considering they are one of my favorite bands. The only hard part was all the travel required just to get there. But after all was said and done, the concert was well worth the effort.

Hoobastank opened the show and although I'm not a fan, the band did a pretty good job. They did a rendition of "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", which I will have to admit, was well done.

P.O.D came up next. I only have their first cd and havent heard anything from the second one so I didnt know any of their new songs, but their performance was just as strong. They even brought up some kids up on stage to help out sing "Youth Of A Nation".
The band ended their set with their song "Alive". When the entire audience began singing with the band, all that excitement and energy seemed to fill the entire place.

Then when Linkin Park took the the stage, the energy took over and house just rocked.
The pits were flowing with people moshing and being carried across the sea of hands. Security did a good job of catching the one coming over the makeshift fence, then putting them back into the pit.
The stands were shaking with fans jumping, pumping, rocking, and singing with the band, especially with songs like "Faint","Numb", and "Somewhere I Belong." The arena absolutely echoed when they did "In The End."

One thing I will say for the band, they are really big into audience participation. When they did "Its Going Down", Mike Shinoda called out to the 'hard core LP fans' to do the song with him because its not on their cds (Its actually on the X-Cutioners cd; Shinoda and Joe Hahn were featured on it).

Even as part of the song, he called out a fan who wore a tshirt that said I Play Guitar Better Than Brad (Brad Delson, lead guitar) to play with the band.

The best thing about this concert was that for one night, people of all races and creeds shared this night. Parents who brought their kids enjoyed the concert as much as their children. In front of our group, a grandmother that came with her granddaughter and her granddaughter's friend was impressed by the fact that a piano was brought in and used for quite a few songs.

So as strange as this sounds, all this positive energy shook the house and brought everyone together in harmony. Wouldnt it be great if every day was like this?

It would be such a dream...

The Frighteners was just as funny with less gore and abit more star power; Michael J Fox, John Astin, and R. Lee Ermey just to name a few. The Devil Made Him Do It
Speaking of movies, there is a story of a man that wore a devil's costome to the "Passion of The Christ" was assaulted by the religious groups that were attending the movie. The wearer, Tyler Wendell, had donned the costume to get a reaction out of the other movie-goers and is currently under investigation for his actions.

So let me get this straight. Wendell was physically assaulted by these so-called Christian groups because they found his outfit offensive and he is the one under investigation?

Although distasteful, at no point did he threaten, harm, or cause harm to any other person. In fact, it was the other patrons that were the disruptive and causing the trouble.

So why exactly is Wendell under investigation? If the comments of "offensive based on community standards" come up, expect the ACLU to review this.

The theater is even thinking about banning anyone who is dressed as, what they call, "evil beings."

What the hell are they going to do when the next Star Wars movie comes out and someone comes dressed up as the Emperor?

The Kingdom Cometh
Kingdom Hospital is coming out Weds night.

Its based off of the original Dutch series The Kingdom (aka Riget) from director Lars Von Trier. The original series is 15 episodes long and was once described as as "ER" on acid. It is so scary that it even scared the hell out of me.

Normally the only thing that scares me that much is my Visa bill.

Stephen King has revamped the series for American audiences, but after Rose Red, I'm pretty doubtful if this version will be as good as the original one. It makes me wonder how would King handle the sex and gore scenes since Von Trier didnt have contend with US censors, especially after Boob-gate.

So far, there has been at least one bad review. There will probably quite a few more as time goes by.

On the upside, the show's website has a few twists and King pays tribute to the Dutch director with the character Nurse Carrie Von Trier.

I just may have to break out the orginal videos again.

There Is No Denying It
Its said throughout the international committee that Americans can be most the lazy, shiftless, and self-centered people. As an American, I find this insulting, but then find too many examples to deny the fact.

Last night, I broke down and went to a Chili's to pick up a carry out order for dinner. The parking lot is large enough to allow the restaurant to designate three spaces for those picking up to go orders, even including signs for these spots and paint markings on the ground. Both sets of signs request that these spots be only used for 15 minutes.

So of course, these spots were filled in with parked cars.

I parked in a space on the other side of the building which had plenty of empty spots but happened to be furthest from the front door.

As I waited for my order, I noticed that the cars were the Carry Out spaces hadnt moved. Thirty minutes later as I'm walking out the door, I watched a family leave the dining area, walk out and get in a truck parked in one of these spaces.

I blatently stood behind the vehicle, looked at the sign in front of the truck, then the ground markings, and begin fumbling with my cell phone. The driver, who I assumed was the father, leans out and says "What choo you want, man?" (Yes, he did talk that badly.)

"Just debating if I need to verify for any outstanding tickets."

His expression showed that he knew he was caught, but tried to play it off anyway; "What choo you talking about, man?"

I pointed to the sign and then to the ground markings. "Apparently, sir, you one of those people that either cant read or doesnt care. You apparently have a habit of parking in spaces where you dont belong. But you're lucky, sir. I'm tired. I'm hungry. I just dont feel like going through the hassle tonight. Good night."

My comment about the parking space comment must have struck a nerve because he replied "Man, it be only twice. Nobody care about dat sh*t.."

I replied "Hope you never end up in a wheelchair, sir." And then walked away, shaking my head.

I know I went abit over the top with my comments especially for something as meaningless as a carry out parking space, but such blatent laziness and inconsideration irritates me to no end. Its rampant througout our society and taught to kids in matters such as these.

Its no wonder other countries think so little of Americans.

Since when is one community's standards exactly the same as another community's?

If I remember correctly, the show had constant disclaimers that the topics covered was not for everyone and that if you would be offended by such things, then change the channel. Apparently that listener was incapable of turning the damn dial.

And if Bubba got fired, then why did Howard Stern only get suspended for the exact same thing? Could it be because Stern covers a larger market area and would mean a larger loss of revenue?

Grammy Scammy
I broke down and watched part of the Grammy's last night. Now I'm regretting it.

Although the performance from the Foo Fighters was excellent, everything else seemed so drab. For that little time that I watched the show, it became apparent that CBS was determined to make the anti-superbowl show, especially with the bad camera editing work that kept jumping the screen.

Then there was the diatribe by some music producer concerning his politics and personal agenda.

I can understand the need for funds to help save music programs in schools, but to call the "search for nothing a waste of money" is personal opinion. It may reflect what many people think, whether it be the search for wmd or the exploration of mars, but its still a personal opinion which made me NOT want to fund anything this man would ever speak for.

Then there was the obvious arguement about digital media. This speech about the act of downloading music makes the industry appear as whining children, throwing a temper tantrum because they arent getting their way. Of course this speech was followed by the latest public announcement indoctrination... I mean, commercial, against downloading music for free.

On a side note, I'm debating about sueing CBS for hardship and emotional trauma. Not only was this an excruciating painful show to even watch, but they dared to have Andre 3000 of Outkast show his nipple.

Double Standards
The Effingham County School Board doesnt want to give a student credit for her work. This young lady is in the school's work program, but because she is a hostess for Hooters, the school board doesnt want to give the credit.

The standard for the work program is for a student to get a job in the retail or service industry. Just because the board doesnt like the company shouldnt matter.

What kind of example are these people showing?! The girl is actually willing to work..! Her parents are supporting her for work..!

Kind of ironic that the Board Superintendent, Michael Moore, has a daughter that has a job within the school system although she doesnt meet the qualifications. The job required that the employee had 3 years experience within the school system. Moore's daughter only had 2 years experience.

2. A federal judge rules that former Ohio State running back, Maurice Clarett, should be allowed into the NFL draft even though Clarett doesnt meet the eligibilty requirements. The judge believes that the rule that a player must be out of high school for at least three years before they can play causes a monopoly for the NFL. Apparently, the judge believes that Clarett is incapable to playing another college, finish college, play for the Arena Football League, or play for the Canadian Football League.

Even if Clarett is considered eligible, would any team want a whiny crybaby who got caught breaking the rules that got him kicked out of college?! Oh wait... Lavernues Coles plays for the Washington Redskins. Nevermind...

Viva Las Vegas
Whenever a chance for a new bicycle ride comes up, I try to take it. This explains how I got talked into riding in Las Vegas.

It was supposed to be a 60 mile road ride done at a leisurely pace. It was supposed to be just a few little hills. It was supposed to be only a little chilly.

It was a total lie.

Those few little hills happened to be in all in a row and created one side of a mountain. In this case part of Red Rock Canyon. It also happens to be at least over 5000 miles above sea level; an altitude that I had never tried before.

Then there was the weather. I've ridden in the cold before so that wasnt a concern, but it is still disconcerting when you see snow in the desert.

So instead of that leisurely 60 mile bicycle ride, this became the 20 miles of torture; riding in the freezing cold... up hill... both ways...

If I had been smart, I would have read the site of the bicycle rental shop, The Blue Diamond Bike Outpost. It even mentions 13 miles of grueling desert... What in the world was I thinking then?! Sheesh...

Now only one thing comes to mind. I'm going to have to try the off road circuit next year. Heh...

If you happen to make it out to the Blue Diamond Outpost, ask for Mike. Great lad that set us up on some premium bicycles.

1. When on the Vegas strip, visit Fatburger! Great burgers and really good service that could put some hotels to shame. Ask for Cooper.

2. Krispy Kreme doughnuts: food of the gods.

3. Bathrooms in hotels should require the toilet paper to be at least within an arm length of the toilet, not on the other side of the frigging room.

4. If Nevada ever becomes an open carry state, I'm going to have to shoot all the street vendors, especially the little pushy ones that hand out the cards and pamplets for the local strippers and escort services.

5. Then there are the vendors that keep asking "When are you folks leaving?" in an attempt to get tourists to get into some of the smaller hotels or other tourist traps, especially the one that said I was from "How-R-Ya!" I am assuming the wee bastard meant Hawaii...

6. With all the Japanese tourists that stopped and looking at me, I figure that I must appear as a shorter, older, less coordinated, and slightly wider version of Ichiaro.

7. The Bellagio hotel put up some awesome displays for the Chinese New Year's, the Year of the Monkey.

Take the Dungeons & Dragons alignment test. Apparently, I am Neutral Evil.

Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral Evil.

Neutral Evil
A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience. She has no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble. On the other hand, she doesn’t have the restless nature or love of conflict that a chaotic evil villain has. The criminal who robs and murders to get what she wants is neutral evil. Some neutral evil villains hold up evil as an ideal, committing evil for its own sake. Most often, such villains are devoted to evil deities or secret societies. The common phrase for neutral evil is "true evil." Neutral evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents pure evil without honor and without variation.

Why is everything there still considered a critical matter? Why is the sky falling and the world will end tomorrow?! Why is information displayed of a report say Unknown?!

For the past few months, I havent had time to work out, so it was quite a relief to finally get back to the routine especially since cycling season begins next month.

But then why do I need to switch?

Because there is nothing more disconcerting than entering the gym, ready to work hard, ogle at the women, and the first thing that occurs is that you literally run into the ex-wife as she walks across the floor.

Apparently she joined during my incarceration in Work Prison.

To break the ice, since she was just as suprised as I was, I decided to talk first: "OH SH_T!!"

So much for that idea...

She didnt say anything, but the glare was there.

Geez, first there was the ex-girlfriend. Now, its the ex-wife?! What is next? The lass that I dated back in high school?!

Send Out The Forces
RIAA has sent out the music police to stop street vendors from selling bootleg cds.

I am not a fan of the RIAA and as much as this sounds illegal, this really isnt an illegal act.

Their lawsuits against file sharing may be stupid, but remember that file sharing means we share, not charge. If they cant make money off of the product, then neither should we. The RIAA is trying to stop others from making money off of their products by sending in agents on their behalf. Its just that normally, people just send lawyers instead of the music swat team.

What does raise a concern is the way these "agents" are acting and who they are targeting. These men are former police officers come running out of an unmarked van, wearing police style vests marked RIAA, giving tickets, taking photos, and impounding cds from of all people, immigrants that have trouble with the English language.

The article noted that the vendor interviewed had to speak thru a translator. Granted, he shouldnt have been selling the stuff in the first place, but the first thing this man will be thinking is that these are legitimate police officers, not civilian agents. Especially if these RIAA enforcers "lose" something in the translation (aka infer they are real cops).

So why exactly couldnt these men go a few streets up and do the same thing to the vendors who could speak English? Probably because anyone else would shoot them on the spot.

Makes you wonder what will happen when you have your own yard sale and you happen to be selling cds...

Another One Gone By
So here it is; the last day of the year. So is it really a new beginning of things?

I really dont know. It could be just like any other day.

A lot of us woke up today, got dressed, fought traffic, and went to work. We went through our routine as if nothing else occurred. Tomorrow, it will be a different year with the same surroundings. We will wake up, get dressed, and go thru the routine over again.

What exactly is different?

Perhaps its in our perceptions.

We see this change in seasons is a chance for us to do something new and exciting; something that perhaps we've been wanting to do for awhile. Or even maybe, bring a change into our lives, hence the New Year's resolutions.

This time of year gives us a chance to celebrate everything in our lives and that chance to move forward.

With that being said, Happy New Year to everyone!

Stay safe, stay healthy, and for God's sakes, stay out of the bicycle lane! Heh...
***********

My New Year's Resolution
The Carpool Cheaters website shows pictures of drivers at their worst driving. Some pictures are of drivers speeding down the carpool lane with only themselves in the car. Other pictures have those who use the bicycle lanes to cut traffic or take up two parking spaces so no one can park next to them.

I love this idea! Instead of my road rage compelling me to want to shoot the offenders, I can take a picture and post it on the Internet for all to see..

As the Carpool Cheats guys say "If you don't want your picture taken while you're doing something illegal, don't do it in public!"

Its All About The Greed
Apparently a woman wanted her Christmas gift at the expense of Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. The woman, Jamie Ann Naughright, accused Manning of ridiculing her in a book released many years ago.

While in college, Manning played a prank on Naughright who was one of the football team's trainers. Since then, the University of Tennessee had paid Naughright over $300, 000 over this incident.

Manning's book mentions the incident, but not the person other than the trainer with "the foul mouth." Naughright claims that this person was her and that he is ridiculing her.

Let me get this straight.

The man never mentions her name, but apparently it must be her. He must be obviously making fun of her so Manning must pay her money.

Hell, I'm making fun of the greedy wench just because of this incident now. Many people wouldnt have even known about her if it wasnt for this moronic lawsuit.

And why should Manning have to pay her anything for expressing his opinion, especially when there was no name given? Isnt this what the First Amendment is for; Freedom of Speech? As far as I remember, being embarassed isnt supposed to be cause for litigation.

I guess the personal training jobs arent paying as well as they used to.

At least I would hope he would be.

Return of The King was released this past week and I must say this was worth the wait. This movie finishes the triology and definately fits the epic novel. At 3.5 hours long, the movie didnt feel long, at least not to me.

Granted, I also made sure that I had gone to the bathroom before the movie.. Heh.

The Cookie Monsters
This article by Wendy McElroy discusses how universities around the country are having cookie sales in order to spoof Affirmative Action (AA) and open discussions about this policy.

For white males, cookies are $1 while for females and blacks, the cost is much less. Its not so much the cookies, but how they are priced that bring up the discussion.

Why does one gender or race get different treatment as opposed to others? Dont we normally call this sort of thing profiling? Why are people in Cincinnati upset about such things?

After all, since universities do this for admissions, then it must all right for police to do the same thing when arresting criminals.

This is the type of silliness that politically correct persons and AA dont wish to be discussed. This becomes prevelant by the number of universities that dont want the cookie demonstrations on their campuses.

And before anyone thinks I'm venting from the hip, keep in mind that that I'm a member of "minority" race as well.

Equality is for everyone, regardless of race and gender.

Otherwise you may be the next one charged the $1 for a cookie...

As of this moment, we are at war. -- Commander Adama, Battlestar Galactica

Positives and Negatives
Kudos must go out to:
* SciFi Network. Their release of Battlestar Galactica is actually pretty good, despite all the early criticism. They remembered that it was the humans, not the special effects, that told the story.

Edward James Olmos, who plays Adama, said that hardcore fans shouldnt want the show because they are just going to complain about the changes. I will have to agree with him. Although I like the show, many arent going to like the fact that Starbuck is a female now and she is attracted to Apollo.

I dont see the issue.

We all know the original Starbuck, Dirk Benedict, wanted Apollo, Richard Hatch. He was in denial. Ha! Ha! (This is a joke. This is the part where you snicker.)

* Ruben Studdard. This article notes out the American Idol winner is proud to be where he is, regardless that his friend, Clay Aiken, has made larger strides in the music world.

Granted, I dont listen to either of these artists, but still a good gesture.

* The judge that allowed screeners to be sent out to the Academy viewers. This will prevent us being limited to Rob Schneider and David Spade up for an award.

Boos must go to:
* The BCS. As Joe Theisman said, drop the C in the name because thats what it is.

What else can you call a forum that doesnt have the #1 and #2 teams playing for the championship?

* Indiana University. The College of Law took took down their Christmas tree under pressure of the students. The tree was originally decorated with maps of the world and non-denominational ornaments in order to show diversity.

Apparently that wasnt enough.

* The woman from Joe Average. This was the show that allowed a beautiful woman choose an average looking male, not some model or body builder.

By choosing the extremely handsome guy that lives with his parents and was placed into the game as a distraction, she once again proved what women are really after.

Major setback for those trying to break the female stereotypes and major proof for the angst of many divorced men.

* Abercrombie & Fitch. The clothing company has recalled their Fall catalog. Parent Advocacy groups didnt like seeing this type of thing marketed to their kids.

So what if its racy? Excuse me, but these catalogs were bought and paid for by those persons above the age of 18.

Why were you letting your kids look at it if you didnt want them to see it?

New Term Meaning Nothing
Speaking of which, parents are being warned about violent videogames by the typical groups. They are now giving these types of games killographic.

Nice name; same weak message.

Games such as these are geared for teens and above. If your kids arent mature enough to distinguish between fantasy and reality, then dont buy it for them.

Hmm.. I wonder if the gaming industry can file a suit against these groups for using a term that they find offensive?

How I got talked into riding at 7:15a on a holiday is beyond me. It wasnt that long ago, that I wouldnt even consider waking up before 8a. And then in the absolute cold weather...??

I practically froze my hands every time I touched the metal frame of my bike, even with my gloves on...

Time For Dinner
Since I helped schedule this year's dinner, I had to tell my cousins, their boyfriends, and the rest of the family what time to be at the parents' home.

As an Asian family, we tend to be the bad when it comes to being on time, especially for our own functions. But as Asian females, my cousins are the worst of the bunch. These four girls would be late to their own funeral.

Since dinner was going to be 4:30, the best thing to do would be to plan ahead.

I told the girls to be at the house at 3p while I told the rest of the family to be there at 4p. Sure enough, they all showed up at 4:15.

When they asked why I told them to be there so early, I just looked at my watch and said "What time did you show up? Now you know why I told you 3p..."

Then There Was The Pie
Two of the older cousins, Jane and Kaye, were fighting over this Oreo pie. They were both determined to be the first to get a slice of this pie. Nothing can be more funny than watching two 20 something year olds madly scrambling for a pie while its still in the box.

Nothing that is, but perhaps watching the shocked look on Kaye's face as she dropped the box on the floor. With the pie still in it....

Or perhaps the shocked look on Jane's face when she dropped her salvaged slice of pie on Kaye's boyfriend...

Its a good thing I really didnt want any of that pie.

But then three large factions combined their forces and worked together to defeat this foe. The screen shot can be found here.

Most would think this was a waste of time, but then how many of us can say that we've worked with 200 hundred other people in order to accomplish what was supposed to be impossible?

There might be hope for we humans, yet.
