It Will Be Alright In The End
Its New Year's Eve. Time to start all over again. Sort of.

I was told the next year should be interesting. That sounded omnious to me, but thats just my warped sense of things. After all, its the people and events in our lives that make things interesting. The year just happens to be along for the ride.

Everyone stay safe and get ready for tomorrow.

Watch Me Navigate
Its almost the end of the year. Usually by this time, we take stock on what we've done for these past twelve months.

I'm not sure if I've actually accomplished anything of any major significance, but I do know that things have changed somewhat. Its what I told myself at the end of last year. Perhaps I cant measure what those changes are, but I can feel it.

Physically and mentally. For good and bad.

So I took another pass at filling the memory box. The pictures of beach walks, the images of dancing on the greens, and even the ones of wading ducks. Time to put them away and go forward.

Off we go then, hm?

Keep You In The Dark
There is just something about a live concert. The energy that it can bring to everyone has always amazed me. For just those few moments, the whole world and everything in it is in harmony, especially when the entire crowd is singing along with the band.

You cant help it. You just have to sing along. Even if its just a recording.

I broke down and bought Foo Fighters: Live At Wembley Stadium. Hearing the crowds and the music, I could still feel power that the music and audience gave. Especially when I had the theater system up abit too loud. Heh.

Flying Turkeys
I did the annual Turkey Ride on Thurs and actually brought the good camera with me. It was a great ride especially with the 30 degree weather. There is just something about riding in cold weather that I enjoy. Add on the fact that we had to ride the local ferry as part of the event was a huge plus.

Ferry
The view was brilliant despite the winds. Low tide always made for a great picture.

RoadView
Sarah had the best story for the day. Her $3000 bike frame was destroyed during the MS Bike ride. She had hit an object and crashed on the road. The cyclist behind her had ran over the frame and kept going. This proved that cyclists dont get any respect, even from other cyclists.

Broken
It broke my heart seeing the frame. I had wanted to get an Orbea Orca frame, but had opted for the new car instead.

Sarah kept an optimistic view when she talked about getting a new frame and attaching her components. She said All I need is a frame and a screw.

I bit my tongue.

Dinner Time

I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner. Bye.
-- Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs

::: Tower View :::
Dinner Time
Centuries ago, sailors on long voyages used to leave a pair of pigs on every deserted island. Or they'd leave a pair of goats.

Either way, on any future visit, the island would be a source of meat. These islands, they were pristine. These were home to breeds of birds with no natural predators. Breeds of birds that lived nowhere else on earth. The plants there, without enemies they evolved without thorns or poisons. Without predators and enemies, these islands, they were paradise. The sailors, the next time they visited these islands, the only things still there would be herds of goats or pigs.

Does this remind you of anything? Maybe the old Adam and Eve story?

What Was That, Archer?

I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want.
-- Mark Twain

::: Tower View :::
What Was That, Archer?
I know I'm wierd but when the tv show Enterprise mentioned this poem, my curiousity caught me looking. I have to admit its pretty good.

The Song of Wandering Aengus by W.B. Yeats
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lads and hilly lands.
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Some say the world will end in fire,

I hold with those who favor fire.

Is also great

A View Of Things To Come

This has got to be the weirdest day of my life. Well, so far.
-- Mikey from Look Who's Talking

::: Tower View :::
A View Of Things To Come
Family gatherings are typically not my forte. More specifically, gatherings of my family are not my forte. Any reason to have a party and off we go. Tonight was a baby shower combined with a costume party.

I have no idea where they got the idea from, but my cousin, Janey, and her husband Ri (as in Rye) are expecting their first baby in a couple of months. So everyone in the family was invited as well as their church. Thats usually not a bad thing except I always fall into the Giggle Loop whenever one of their pastors or deacons decide to talk. Its gotten to the point where I will stand outside to avoid the blessing of the food (aka the 30 minute speech).

Then, of course, there are the party games my family comes up with. Can you tell me what the frack this is?!

WTF
Of course, its chocolate that has been squished in a diaper. There were eight different diapers with different kinds of chocolate. The one that guessed the most won the game. Tasting was recommended.

The food stuff that has been around for generations. The kind that was given to soldiers during WWII. The kind that was given to me as a child growing up. And quite frankly I still like it.

So here are some kind words to PETA: Shut the fuck up.

I've posted this before, but when I heard the news that Drummerboy passed away today from his long term illness, it was the first thing that came to mind.

Shadow of the Day by Linkin Park
I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes solutions aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye is the only way

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you

In cards and flowers on your window
Your friends all plead for you to stay
Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye is the only way

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you...

I and the rest of The Fallen will see you again, sir. Just not yet.

Pain And Suffering

Know how sublime a thing it is - To suffer and be strong.
-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

::: Tower View :::
Pain And Suffering
This past weekend was the big event of the year; the MS Bike ride. With over 2,300 cyclists participating, its the main event that Team Blue trains for. Its what we hurt ourselves over for and struggle to complete.

And in the end, the accomplishment outweighs the pain.

Then you end up with silly little stories like this one. Apologies must go out to Peter King, the NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, for "borrowing" the title.

The 10 Things I Think I Know -- 2008 MS Bike Ride Edition
1. The predominant cycling announcer, Phil Liggett, has always said that "Cycling is all about the suffering." This probably explains this year's most said comment: "My ass hurts!"

2. The most used high tech device used this year: the plastic freezer bag.

3. This is because its now a requirement that the last 15 miles must be ridden during a huge rain storm of biblical proportions.

4. One rider earned the name "Captain Nemo" for having to take their recumbant bike thru all the flooded streets. It was so bad that there was actually water inside the frame and it had to be drained.

5. If you ever want to have fun, when a cyclist comes into the finish area after riding thru a torrential downpour, ask him if they would like a bottle of water.

6. If you ever need to get your heart rate up, try almost dropping your wallet through an open hole while going over a bridge.

7. I can do without seeing yet another PB&J sandwich until next season.

8. The snowcone flavours were actually kind of bad this year. Root Beer?!

9. The Powerade was an excellent idea for Day One. Too bad we drank it all so there was none left for Day Two.

10. The pain and suffering we go thru for this is nothing when compared to the folks who have to deal with their MS throughout their life. Its no wonder cyclists want to keep going despite crashing across a metal grate bridge.

Cheers, mates.

The Pallid Wreath by Walt Whitman
Somehow I cannot let it go yet, funeral though it is,
Let it remain back there on its nail suspended,
With pink, blue, yellow, all blanch'd, and the white now gray
and ashy,
One wither'd rose put years ago for thee, dear friend;
But I do not forget thee. Hast thou then faded?
Is the odor exhaled? Are the colors, vitalities, dead?
No, while memories subtly play--the past vivid as ever;
For but last night I woke, and in that spectral ring saw thee,
Thy smile, eyes, face, calm, silent, loving as ever:
So let the wreath hang still awhile within my eye-reach,
It is not yet dead to me, nor even pallid.

Trip To Memory Lane
In the past, I've never really cared too much about the Olympics, but I've really enjoyed them this time around.

Perhaps since its in China, that was a natural interest to me. Perhaps its because I'm more into athletics than I was in the past, especially with cycling, soccer, and volleyball. Perhaps its the chance of seeing history in the making. Case in point: Michael Phelps trying to win eight gold medals.

Whatever the reason, there will be some memories that I will carry with me.

Explaining Myself

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
-- from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams

::: Tower View :::
Explaining Myself
Although I tend to have road rage, its pretty much calmed down over the years. But then again, my stories simply dont compare to other stories out there.

I rear-ended the car in front of me. I admit that. It was my fault.

So, we both pull over to the side of the road, and slowly the driver of the car I hit gets out of his car. . and you know how you just-get-sooo-stressed... and life...sometimes life seems like... suddenly funny?

Well, the driver of the car I hit is a DWARF! He gets out of his car and I get out of my car. He is frowning and scowling and he storms over to me. Right up close to me he looks up in my face and says,

"I AM NOT HAPPY!"

I don't know what possessed me, officer, but I looked down at him and I said,
"Well, if you're not Happy -- which one are you?"

And that's when the fight started...

Good thing this wasnt me. Heh. I would have made a comment about the guy having a short fuse.

After The Ride

If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on.
-- Lance Armstrong

::: Tower View :::
After The Ride
Things have been pretty hectic lately, but the one thing that I did get enjoy was this year's Tour de France. Personally, I felt this year would have been a farce when Astana, the top team with the current TDF champion, wasnt invited for political reasons.

Despite it all, the Tour was still a most exciting, memorable event. For the first time in memory, there were two top American teams in the Tour. One of them, Team Columbia, won 5 of the 20 stages.

There was John-Lee Augustyn's attack on the highest mountain, only to crash over the side on the decent. The scene of Augustyn climbing back up the side, then peering back over to see his bicycle still sliding down the mountain.

Through it all, Carlos Sastre, the ever quiet, consistent Spaniard took the lead with his attack on the legendary mountain, the Alpe D'Huez. Then with the final time trial, with everything up grabs, the favorite, Cadel Evans, couldnt close the difference between him and Sastre.

So for the second year, Cadel came in second behind a Spaniard.

As much as I enjoyed this year's Tour, there still must be a Lance Armstrong sighting.

Nuptials

-- from American Wedding

::: Tower View :::
Nuptials
So I had a memorable trip this past weekend when an old friend of mine, Doombringer, got married. We have known each other since the college years when we worked at different video game stores. Then there were the times when I was his wingman when we did the club scene. Those are stories for another time.

He and his bride live in another state so unless I wanted to drive days to get there, I was flying. Especially since they had asked me to be part of the wedding party.

So I was abit irritable when I arrived at the airport 8a Friday morning for a 9:45a flight that was cancelled with no warning. I was offered the standby flight at 2:45p, but there was no luck since it was completely full. It didnt really matter since there were ten of us on standby.

Which left the 7:30p flight and guaranteed that I was going to miss rehersal as well as dinner.

The departure time turned into 8p due to weather from the arriving plane. Then 8:15p. Then 8:30p. Then 9p when there was a mechanical issue with the plane. Then 9:30p. Then 10p. Then 11p.

When the plane finally arrived, we left in just under 20 mins and got to my destination at 1:30a Sat morning.

It was supposed to be a 2 hour flight.

Nevertheless, I arrived and everything went along swimmingly. The typical wedding things occurred just as expected. The bride and her party were 20 mins late coming back from their hair appointment. One groomsman didnt show up, which worked out for me because it let me walk with two bridemaids.

The young ringbearer kept pulling on the young flowergirl because he wanted to run down the aisle. She in turn would pull him back so he wouldnt run. It ended up being a tug of war in the middle of the aisle for a few minutes.

The ceremony went well. The reception was fine with all the dancing, laughing, smiling, and cake smearing.

After the reception, we all went to an Irish pub, which is something I hadnt done in quite some time. It was also ironic that I was the oldest one there, but the one that danced the most. Ahh, the miracle of Gatorade.

The whole trip was an experience. I met some really good people in the brides maids, groomsmen, and family members. It was funny that in each airport, I met a teacher; the math teacher heading out to party with his friends and then Miss Hall out of Knoxville who was going on vacation with her family.

But the biggest experience was getting to be part of a joyous occasion in something as simple as an hour long ceremony. The happiness it generated only proves that there is hope for humanity.

Congrats to you DB and H! Keep smiling and laughing. Let us know when the wee ones are coming. Heh.
