Bleed With Me

Colonel James: You never served in the military, did you, Mr Rago?
Bill: No. My military experience is limited to the day that I walked for hours in the rain from Arlington Cemetary to the White House carrying the name of the soldier who died needlessly in Vietnam.
Colonel James: Do you remember the soldier's name?
Bill: Umm... No...

Fire And Ice by Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

A View Of Things To Come

This has got to be the weirdest day of my life. Well, so far.
-- Mikey from Look Who's Talking

::: Tower View :::
A View Of Things To Come
Family gatherings are typically not my forte. More specifically, gatherings of my family are not my forte. Any reason to have a party and off we go. Tonight was a baby shower combined with a costume party.

I have no idea where they got the idea from, but my cousin, Janey, and her husband Ri (as in Rye) are expecting their first baby in a couple of months. So everyone in the family was invited as well as their church. Thats usually not a bad thing except I always fall into the Giggle Loop whenever one of their pastors or deacons decide to talk. Its gotten to the point where I will stand outside to avoid the blessing of the food (aka the 30 minute speech).

Then, of course, there are the party games my family comes up with. Can you tell me what the frack this is?!

WTF
Of course, its chocolate that has been squished in a diaper. There were eight different diapers with different kinds of chocolate. The one that guessed the most won the game. Tasting was recommended.

And the sun will set for you

Pain And Suffering

Know how sublime a thing it is - To suffer and be strong.
-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

::: Tower View :::
Pain And Suffering
This past weekend was the big event of the year; the MS Bike ride. With over 2,300 cyclists participating, its the main event that Team Blue trains for. Its what we hurt ourselves over for and struggle to complete.

And in the end, the accomplishment outweighs the pain.

Then you end up with silly little stories like this one. Apologies must go out to Peter King, the NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, for "borrowing" the title.

The 10 Things I Think I Know -- 2008 MS Bike Ride Edition
1. The predominant cycling announcer, Phil Liggett, has always said that "Cycling is all about the suffering." This probably explains this year's most said comment: "My ass hurts!"

2. The most used high tech device used this year: the plastic freezer bag.

3. This is because its now a requirement that the last 15 miles must be ridden during a huge rain storm of biblical proportions.

4. One rider earned the name "Captain Nemo" for having to take their recumbant bike thru all the flooded streets. It was so bad that there was actually water inside the frame and it had to be drained.

5. If you ever want to have fun, when a cyclist comes into the finish area after riding thru a torrential downpour, ask him if they would like a bottle of water.

6. If you ever need to get your heart rate up, try almost dropping your wallet through an open hole while going over a bridge.

7. I can do without seeing yet another PB&J sandwich until next season.

8. The snowcone flavours were actually kind of bad this year. Root Beer?!

9. The Powerade was an excellent idea for Day One. Too bad we drank it all so there was none left for Day Two.

10. The pain and suffering we go thru for this is nothing when compared to the folks who have to deal with their MS throughout their life. Its no wonder cyclists want to keep going despite crashing across a metal grate bridge.

Cheers, mates.

The Pallid Wreath by Walt Whitman
Somehow I cannot let it go yet, funeral though it is,
Let it remain back there on its nail suspended,
With pink, blue, yellow, all blanch'd, and the white now gray
and ashy,
One wither'd rose put years ago for thee, dear friend;
But I do not forget thee. Hast thou then faded?
Is the odor exhaled? Are the colors, vitalities, dead?
No, while memories subtly play--the past vivid as ever;
For but last night I woke, and in that spectral ring saw thee,
Thy smile, eyes, face, calm, silent, loving as ever:
So let the wreath hang still awhile within my eye-reach,
It is not yet dead to me, nor even pallid.

Explaining Myself

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
-- from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams

::: Tower View :::
Explaining Myself
Although I tend to have road rage, its pretty much calmed down over the years. But then again, my stories simply dont compare to other stories out there.

I rear-ended the car in front of me. I admit that. It was my fault.

So, we both pull over to the side of the road, and slowly the driver of the car I hit gets out of his car. . and you know how you just-get-sooo-stressed... and life...sometimes life seems like... suddenly funny?

Well, the driver of the car I hit is a DWARF! He gets out of his car and I get out of my car. He is frowning and scowling and he storms over to me. Right up close to me he looks up in my face and says,

"I AM NOT HAPPY!"

I don't know what possessed me, officer, but I looked down at him and I said,
"Well, if you're not Happy -- which one are you?"

And that's when the fight started...

After The Ride

If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on.
-- Lance Armstrong

::: Tower View :::
After The Ride
Things have been pretty hectic lately, but the one thing that I did get enjoy was this year's Tour de France. Personally, I felt this year would have been a farce when Astana, the top team with the current TDF champion, wasnt invited for political reasons.

Despite it all, the Tour was still a most exciting, memorable event. For the first time in memory, there were two top American teams in the Tour. One of them, Team Columbia, won 5 of the 20 stages.

There was John-Lee Augustyn's attack on the highest mountain, only to crash over the side on the decent. The scene of Augustyn climbing back up the side, then peering back over to see his bicycle still sliding down the mountain.

Through it all, Carlos Sastre, the ever quiet, consistent Spaniard took the lead with his attack on the legendary mountain, the Alpe D'Huez. Then with the final time trial, with everything up grabs, the favorite, Cadel Evans, couldnt close the difference between him and Sastre.

So for the second year, Cadel came in second behind a Spaniard.

As much as I enjoyed this year's Tour, there still must be a Lance Armstrong sighting.

Nuptials
So I had a memorable trip this past weekend when an old friend of mine, Doombringer, got married. We have known each other since the college years when we worked at different video game stores. Then there were the times when I was his wingman when we did the club scene. Those are stories for another time.

He and his bride live in another state so unless I wanted to drive days to get there, I was flying. Especially since they had asked me to be part of the wedding party.

So I was abit irritable when I arrived at the airport 8a Friday morning for a 9:45a flight that was cancelled with no warning. I was offered the standby flight at 2:45p, but there was no luck since it was completely full. It didnt really matter since there were ten of us on standby.

Which left the 7:30p flight and guaranteed that I was going to miss rehersal as well as dinner.

The departure time turned into 8p due to weather from the arriving plane. Then 8:15p. Then 8:30p. Then 9p when there was a mechanical issue with the plane. Then 9:30p. Then 10p. Then 11p.

When the plane finally arrived, we left in just under 20 mins and got to my destination at 1:30a Sat morning.

It was supposed to be a 2 hour flight.

Nevertheless, I arrived and everything went along swimmingly. The typical wedding things occurred just as expected. The bride and her party were 20 mins late coming back from their hair appointment. One groomsman didnt show up, which worked out for me because it let me walk with two bridemaids.

The young ringbearer kept pulling on the young flowergirl because he wanted to run down the aisle. She in turn would pull him back so he wouldnt run. It ended up being a tug of war in the middle of the aisle for a few minutes.

The ceremony went well. The reception was fine with all the dancing, laughing, smiling, and cake smearing.

After the reception, we all went to an Irish pub, which is something I hadnt done in quite some time. It was also ironic that I was the oldest one there, but the one that danced the most. Ahh, the miracle of Gatorade.

The whole trip was an experience. I met some really good people in the brides maids, groomsmen, and family members. It was funny that in each airport, I met a teacher; the math teacher heading out to party with his friends and then Miss Hall out of Knoxville who was going on vacation with her family.

But the biggest experience was getting to be part of a joyous occasion in something as simple as an hour long ceremony. The happiness it generated only proves that there is hope for humanity.

Congrats to you DB and H! Keep smiling and laughing. Let us know when the wee ones are coming. Heh.

Euology

The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.
-- Ernest Hemingway

Euology
To the Spike clan, our condolescences and prayers to you.

Too One Shortly to Die by Walt Whitman
    1
FROM all the rest I single out you, having a message for you:
You are to die - Let others tell you what they please, I cannot prevaricate,
I am exact and merciless, but I love you - There is no escape for you.

Softly I lay my right hand upon you - you just feel it,
I do not argue - I bend my head close, and half envelope it,
I sit quietly by - I remain faithful,
I am more than nurse, more than parent or neighbor,
I absolve you from all except yourself, spiritual, bodily - that is
Eternal - you yourself will surely escape,
The corpse you will leave will be but excrementitious.

    2
The sun bursts through in unlooked-for directions!
Strong thoughts fill you, and confidence - you smile!
You forget you are sick, as I forget you are sick,
You do not see the medicines - you do not mind the weeping friends - I
    am with you,
I exclude others from you - there is nothing to be commiserated,
I do not commiserate - I congratulate you.

Remember, freedom is not free and there must always be a price to be paid. Its something that too many have seemed to have forgotten. Back in the day, we were reminded of this, even as kids.

I always liked the Schoolhouse Rock series as a kid. For many, this was the only history they ever knew. Sure it wasnt the complete story, but it was a start.

Hope you had a fun, safe Fourth of July. Mind the fireworks.. Heh.

A Sordid Twist Of Fate

Why can't we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn't work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves. Then we would have to say goodbye. I hate goodbyes. I know what I need. I need more hellos.

A few of us had gotten into a discussion about the differences between goth and emo, particularly in music. We all had our opinions and since we are arent in the music industry, its all subjective.

This has become one of my favorite emo songs, although its more alternative in nature. Emo songs dont require screaming, but it does help. Ha!

Death of The Wordsmith

You ever notice that the women who are against abortion are women you wouldnt want to fuck in the first place?
-- George Carlin

::: Tower View :::
Death of The Wordsmith
George Carlin has been one of my favorite comedians of all time and had become an influence on my own humor. His use of word play was legendary, especially for his "Seven Dirty Words You Can Never Say On Television."

I always remembered his rant on being a fussy eater:
Fussy eater is an euphamism for "Big Pain In The Ass." Those are the people that will sit at the table and say "I can't eat that. I don't like that. Did you make that? Is there a picture of it in the cook book? I bet it don't look like that."

Carlin was irreverant, abusive, and never apologetic. No one was ever safe from his insight and commentary. Nor should they be. After all, if you cant laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

I bet he's looking up at us now and smiling. Heh.

Its ironic how "revenge" played a part with the band and the movie Gladiator, which had Phoenix as the mad emperor, Commodus.

1) Thankfully, the office cafeteria is now handled by a different company. While the previous company was ok, we always joked about how they served the local roadkill. I got to visit the brand new noodle bar and got lots of chicken, veggies, and broth. Too bad they forgot the noodles.

2) I've found that I've become one of those obnoxious car owners. Since I got the new car detailed, I've checked the weather report every day to make sure it doesnt rain. I dont want the shine messed up.

3) Overheard the other day: "I am your toilet person." That can be taken in so many ways.

4) Today I was asked by an IT professional if I could log into a database that was taken offline. The sad part it took them several minutes before they realized what they were asking didnt make sense. Some people are just way overpaid.

5) Damn censorship. The DVD version replaces the word gay with the word butt.

It was a little hectic this past weekend, but it was worth it.

I got to play cricket for the first time. The best part is that it was on company time as a team builder. We might have to see about getting a cricket league at the office.

Then there was this year's Trinity Ride. At least this year there was sunlight. Last year we had to ride in a tropical storm. But then again, that was an absolute blast and one of my favorite rides.

This year the band actually got to play during lunch.

Finally, congratulations go to Stephie for graduating the college nursing program.

Then on the second day, there were seven bridges to go over.. in the wind.. The first 6 bridges were even before we hit 30 miles. My legs felt like they were going to fall off. You end up with views like this.
