The Long Goodbye

I would kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
-- Stephen Wright

Although we lost our match tonight, I was in pretty good spirits. The game was an absolute blast with the wind, rain, and cold. Their best striker worked over our slow defense since we more in an attack formation then defense. Granted we were missing our best defender and striker, but we still learned alot. I cant wait for the next game.

Afterwards, the huge amount of dry cleaning was put away and I wolfed down a ton of chili from Wendy's. While I was stuffing my face, I found the full length video to Placebo's A Song To Say Goodbye. Its not much of a consolation prize, but it still is absolutely brilliant.

Flying High Again

My approach is hoping that every player that I've played with, every place that I've been, that in some way, shape or form, I leave my stamp on those people and those places. Thats what I want my legacy to be. The football stuff, thats all gravy.
-- Kurt Warner

I've been a fan of Warner since his days in St. Louis. The fact that he came in as unknown and made an impact on the world has been an inspiration. Through it all, he remains a charitable, devout, humble man.

Well that and he has one hell of a fiery wife. One game when Warner was having a bad day, an Arizona fan began calling the quarterback some not so polite names. At that point, Brenda Warner, turned to the irate fan and said "He's a two time MVP. What have you done?!" The fan promptly shut up.

Now, for the third time, Warner goes into the biggest game in the NFL. The old man of the league marches his troops once more. How could someone not be encouraged?

Jersey

Good luck Cardinals! Go get some!

UPDATE: That was a great game! It could have gone either way. Its true that defense wins championships because Arizona's defense failed at the worst time. Warner had a decent game, but the interception turned out pretty big. The Cardinals still had a chance except for the collapse on defense.

Don't Let Your Mind Tell The Story Here

Mitchell's the man. I'm the idiot. You're the screw-up. And we're all losers. Welcome to Music Town.
-- Joe from Empire Records

I always wondered why some bands make several video versions of their song. For example, U2's song One has at least 3 types that I am aware of. Abit ironic considering the name of the song.

I guess its partly creativity and partly marketing. After all, some different visions appeal to different people.

While I was rummaging around abit, looking for the video to Open Up Your Eyes by Tonic, I stumbled on this version, which I could only call "The Pretty Version."

Of course there is the more known, more popular roller skating version.

I wondered if this one was thought up by some corporate suit in order to make the song more memorable. I guess it worked since its the video I found more often. The band even have it displayed on their site.

It was just one of those silly things that made me go "Hmmm."

Chest Trap

The quickest way to a man's heart is through his chest.
-- Rosanne Barr

Tonight was the first game of the intermural soccer season. My team, BC United, was matched up one of the AC teams, of which the name escapes me. We just knew that they were good and they were ready. Most of them played in the local leagues around town. Even for a 7 vs 7 squad, we were just hoping for a good outing.

The things we had going for us: a good, experienced goalie and a good, experienced defensive back. Well, that and almost a full roster. Ok, maybe that and their forwards couldnt get back to play defense while we typically had four or five on defense and clogged the passing lanes.

Ok, maybe it was the fact it was the first game of the season and most of their group hadnt worked together in awhile. In our case, we had most of the same group from last year. And we've been playing in almost every scrimmage since last year.

TheField
Now I can understand why soccer is called The Beautiful Game. For all the running around and gasping for air, everything still seemed to move in slow motion. You could watch as forwards fought to get in position. The ball sailing as a group fought to head it in a different direction. A pass fired just in the right spot so your team-mate can head the ball in past the unsuspecting keeper.

It became even more beautiful as we won our first match 3-0 against a team that we just wanted to keep the game close.

To show for our effort, we all came away with aches, pains, and a lot of sweat. I took so many bounces off my chest, for a little while there, it appeared as if someone had given me CPR.

But what we really took away from this, was lots and lots of fun. Regardless of the score, both sides gave it their all and left it on the field. Thats all that really matters.

Being Childish

Its never too late to have a happy childhood
-- Tom Robbins

Today was the typical lunch time soccer game which I fondly call recess. It was raining. It was cold. The field was muddy.

It was absolutely brilliant.

We ran around in the freezing rain, flopping thru mud, and flying thru puddles. We didnt even want to take a halftime break so that our muscles wouldnt cool down. We were all covered in mud, laughing hysterically. I couldnt even feel my fingers until twenty minutes after we were done playing. People that walked by on the sidewalk were under umbrellas, pointing at us, calling us crazy.

But isnt this what we watch our kids do? Go out. Have fun. Enjoy life. Enjoy their friends. Play.

How does the saying go? Oh yeah...

You dont stop playing because you get old. You get old because you stop playing.

Merlin: It's not for you, Uther. Hearth and home, wife and child.
Uther: To kill and be King. Is that all?
Merlin: Perhaps not even that.
-- from Excalibur

Ever since seeing Excalibur, its been one of my favorite movies and an influence on my imagination. The Arthur legend was always in my memory, but the movie pulled it all together. That and the song O Fortuna has lasted generations long before the film was created.

O Fortuna,
velut luna statu variabilis,
semper crescis aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis nunc obdurat
et tunc curat ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!

Do Robots Dream Of Electric Sheep?

Don't you think dreams and the Internet are similar? They are both areas where the repressed conscious mind vents.
-- from Paprika

I've been a fan of anime since I was young, but as I grew older, it was harder and harder to find good anime. Time and responsibility became a factor as well as what was available here in the US. There are alot of anime dvds available at your local Best Buy, but the majority of it are tv series aimed towards the teen sector. I may be a kid at heart, but even I have my limitations. So my search for anime dwindled.

Then while flipping channels on the tv, completely by accident, I found one of the best anime movies I had seen in a very long time. The latest full length feature by acclaimed director Satoshi Kon known as Paprika was on. Based on the novel, this film is definately what I have been craving.

Paprika is not meant for kids. Very similiar to Kon's earlier works like Perfect Blue, the story is an intriguing mix of sci-fi, psychology, and mystery. It touches on a variety of questions. What are the differences between adulthood and childhood? Between dreams and reality? Is the person you see in the mirror really you?

Or are you the reflection of them?

The Wisdom Of Nike

Now there are more overweight people in America than average weight people. So overweight people are now average. Which means you've met your New Year's resolution.
-- Jay Leno

Happy New Year to everyone. Most folks have some sort of resolution for this time of year. But then, how many of them truly follow up on them? Weight loss, more exercise, etc. All of which tend to be forgotten by the second week.

I typically dont have any sort of resolution. I would prefer to have some goal to have done by the end of the year.

My goal for last year was change. Some sort of change. As I've said before, I dont know if I could measure it but I sure can feel it.

This year's goal is to follow the motto of the clothes company, Nike: Just Do It.

For too long I've been sitting here, being way too complacent for my tastes. So now its time to do something. Anything.

So I'll start with the simplest thing. I'm finally updating the blog.

With YouTube having its legal issues, alot of the stuff I like to show isnt allowed. With Blogger's constant changes, using one of their basic templates was a good way to go. So there will be changes being made as time goes by.

I've kept the original in storage, just in case. Besides, old things have this bad habit of coming back around.

Now I just need to stick to my resolut.. err.. goal. Perhaps have a little resolve.

Physically and mentally. For good and bad.

So I took another pass at filling the memory box. The pictures of beach walks, the images of dancing on the greens, and even the ones of wading ducks. Time to put them away and go forward.

Dinner Time
Centuries ago, sailors on long voyages used to leave a pair of pigs on every deserted island. Or they'd leave a pair of goats.

Either way, on any future visit, the island would be a source of meat. These islands, they were pristine. These were home to breeds of birds with no natural predators. Breeds of birds that lived nowhere else on earth. The plants there, without enemies they evolved without thorns or poisons. Without predators and enemies, these islands, they were paradise. The sailors, the next time they visited these islands, the only things still there would be herds of goats or pigs.

Does this remind you of anything? Maybe the old Adam and Eve story?

What Was That, Archer?

I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want.
-- Mark Twain

::: Tower View :::
What Was That, Archer?
I know I'm wierd but when the tv show Enterprise mentioned this poem, my curiousity caught me looking. I have to admit its pretty good.

The Song of Wandering Aengus by W.B. Yeats
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lads and hilly lands.
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

I Am Fading

Yasuo: When it's all said and done, the Wired is just a medium of communication and the transfer of information. You mustn't confuse it with the real world. Do you understand what I'm warning you about?
Lain: You're wrong.
Yasuo: Huh?
Lain: The border between the two isnt all that clear. I'll be able to enter it soon.
-- from Serial Experiments: Lain

::: Tower View :::
I Am Fading
I've liked this song ever since I watched Serial Experiments: Lain. If you have never seen the series, the easiest way to explain it is that Lain, a high school student, becomes trapped between her identity in the real world and the one within "The Wired." For her, reality may be nothing more than a digital imprint.

While the series can be classified as really wierd, the song fit the storyline.

Bleed With Me

Colonel James: You never served in the military, did you, Mr Rago?
Bill: No. My military experience is limited to the day that I walked for hours in the rain from Arlington Cemetary to the White House carrying the name of the soldier who died needlessly in Vietnam.
Colonel James: Do you remember the soldier's name?
Bill: Umm... No...

Light Em Up
I first read this poem back in high school, oh so many moons ago. For some odd reason, it came to mind today.

Fire And Ice by Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

A View Of Things To Come

This has got to be the weirdest day of my life. Well, so far.
-- Mikey from Look Who's Talking

::: Tower View :::
A View Of Things To Come
Family gatherings are typically not my forte. More specifically, gatherings of my family are not my forte. Any reason to have a party and off we go. Tonight was a baby shower combined with a costume party.

I have no idea where they got the idea from, but my cousin, Janey, and her husband Ri (as in Rye) are expecting their first baby in a couple of months. So everyone in the family was invited as well as their church. Thats usually not a bad thing except I always fall into the Giggle Loop whenever one of their pastors or deacons decide to talk. Its gotten to the point where I will stand outside to avoid the blessing of the food (aka the 30 minute speech).

Then, of course, there are the party games my family comes up with. Can you tell me what the frack this is?!

WTF
Of course, its chocolate that has been squished in a diaper. There were eight different diapers with different kinds of chocolate. The one that guessed the most won the game. Tasting was recommended.

Shadow of the Day by Linkin Park
I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes solutions aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye is the only way

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you

In cards and flowers on your window
Your friends all plead for you to stay
Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye is the only way

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you...

I and the rest of The Fallen will see you again, sir. Just not yet.

Pain And Suffering

Know how sublime a thing it is - To suffer and be strong.
-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

::: Tower View :::
Pain And Suffering
This past weekend was the big event of the year; the MS Bike ride. With over 2,300 cyclists participating, its the main event that Team Blue trains for. Its what we hurt ourselves over for and struggle to complete.

And in the end, the accomplishment outweighs the pain.

Then you end up with silly little stories like this one. Apologies must go out to Peter King, the NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, for "borrowing" the title.

The 10 Things I Think I Know -- 2008 MS Bike Ride Edition
1. The predominant cycling announcer, Phil Liggett, has always said that "Cycling is all about the suffering." This probably explains this year's most said comment: "My ass hurts!"

2. The most used high tech device used this year: the plastic freezer bag.

3. This is because its now a requirement that the last 15 miles must be ridden during a huge rain storm of biblical proportions.

4. One rider earned the name "Captain Nemo" for having to take their recumbant bike thru all the flooded streets. It was so bad that there was actually water inside the frame and it had to be drained.

5. If you ever want to have fun, when a cyclist comes into the finish area after riding thru a torrential downpour, ask him if they would like a bottle of water.

6. If you ever need to get your heart rate up, try almost dropping your wallet through an open hole while going over a bridge.

7. I can do without seeing yet another PB&J sandwich until next season.

8. The snowcone flavours were actually kind of bad this year. Root Beer?!

9. The Powerade was an excellent idea for Day One. Too bad we drank it all so there was none left for Day Two.

10. The pain and suffering we go thru for this is nothing when compared to the folks who have to deal with their MS throughout their life. Its no wonder cyclists want to keep going despite crashing across a metal grate bridge.

Cheers, mates.
